i am awake too early on a day that k. and i agreed we would sleep in. the dog is always needy on the weekends, always curious about the days we don't rush out at dawn. i fed her at 4 am and just let her out, stumbling to pick up the paper as she sprinted after squirrels. i dropped the rest of the paper on the ground in order to get to the sports page.
it's tournament time, people.
the girls pulled it off last night. we made it past our first regional game by one point. i nearly had a fucking heart attack. i was fairly ruthless on the bench, using profanity on occasion, shouting at players who were being selfish or making excuses, screaming at refs. the whole thing was terribly dramatic. at one point in the 3rd quarter when we took the lead for the first time in the game and the other coach called a timeout, i jumped up off the bench and motioned to the crowd to stand up, cheer louder. i know i looked silly but i don't fucking care. we had a great student section and you MUST take advantage of that, you know?
i was upset at the girls after the game, in perhaps an unfair way. they are a team of all sophomores and one senior. they are baby heads. they are still on the learning curve, still taking everything coach does personally, still acting like they are the only ones on the floor. they are like puppies who haven't grown into their feet yet, tripping over each other to climb up the stairs. that being said, i need to cut them some slack.
however, it was an ugly fucking win. our defense was lazy, watching and foul happy. our shot selection was poor and one of our shooters couldn't hit and neither could our one senior who has been a backbone for the the team; she actually fouled out. we had many turnovers, missed lay-ups and freethrows(my favorite phrase is basketball is about lay-ups and freethrows, cause those are the 'easiest' shots and the most important in a close game).
i swear i started writing this with the intention to explain that i woke up at some point this morning crying. i was dreaming that for our second regional game today we had to swim. i mean, we couldn't play basketball for some reason, we had to swim and i was the last one in the rally. on my last length of the pool, there was a huge fan blowing into the water and i couldn't get through it; it was only in my lane. we lost by three points and didn't move on to state because of the fan and i couldn't redo it. i started crying on the edge of the pool and woke up with tears hitting the pillow here.
translation:i might care a little about what happens to the team.
